Do Orthodontic Retainers Cause cavities?

Orthodontic retainers do not cause cavities. Cavities are formed when virulent bacteria in our mouths process sugars into acids that effectively erode the tooth structure until it collapses into a hole in the tooth. Brushing and flossing disrupt the bacteria and can reduce a person’s incidence of cavities.

Even though retainers do not cause cavities they do need to be cleaned and maintained properly. Let’s review the retainers and the best way to care for each type as well as consequences of not maintaining your appliances

Fixed retainers are cemented to the teeth to maintain alignment and space closure upon braces removals. The cement used is meant to secure the bar comfortably behind the teeth for maximum esthetics. The fixed retainer may be broken when the cement separates from the tooth or if the wire becomes bent/cut. Should this happen visit your orthodontist for repair or replacement. Make your appointment quickly as it is possible for the teeth to move. Fixed retainers may also make it more difficult to brush and floss. If you do not brush and floss your permanent retainer then your teeth may get cavities and gum disease. Be sure to remove the tarter buildup at your dentist regularly to ensure no cavities or gum disease develop. Remember to visit at least every 6 months to ensure excellent oral health.

Hawley retainers can develop a film on the acrylic portion that not only smells but can cause a type of fungus infection in the mouth called Candidiasis (thrush) be sure to clean your retainer with a denture cleaner or follow the instructions given by your orthodontist.

Essex retainers also need to be cleaned regularly. You may use a denture cleaner, or warm soapy water to cleanse daily. Should you choose to whiten your teeth in your Essix retainer it will also help keep the inside nice and fresh. Please don’t boil or leave your retainer in a hot place or the plastic will distort. Do not eat with your essix in place or sugar and staining food particles will promote cavities and stains because of proximity to your teeth.

Although orthodontic retainers don’t cause caries it is very important that you follow your orthodontist’s instructions.
