Why Clear Aligners are About More than Looks

Clear aligners have become more and more popular in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. The cosmetic benefits are obvious—unlike metal braces, clear aligners are so discreet that often people won’t even know you’re wearing them.

That said, there are other benefits to clear aligners that have nothing to do with their appearance. If you want to know a little bit more about why this treatment is so popular, here are a few reasons that have nothing to do with how they look.

No Dietary Restrictions

If you’ve ever had braces before, or if you know someone who has, you might be aware of the dietary restrictions that people who have them deal with.

Clear aligners, however, don’t have the same problem. They’re removable, which means that they can’t be damaged by the foods you eat. Obviously, your orthodontist probably wouldn’t recommend that you eat a ton of candy and tortilla chips, but the fact that clear aligners are removable means that you can still indulge occasionally without stressing about popping a bracket.

You’ll Finish Faster

People don’t usually undergo orthodontic treatment because they really want to wear braces; they’re mostly thinking about the results. In many cases, clear aligners can get you the same results as traditional braces in considerably less time. Clear aligners tend to see results after around a year, whereas traditional braces take 18-24 months.

No Uncomfortable Wires

With any orthodontic treatment, you’ll probably have a little bit of discomfort before you get used to your oral appliance. However, some people worry that wires and brackets will be a little bit harder to get used to. In some ways, that’s true; you are much more likely to have something poke at you with traditional braces.

Clear aligners are much more low-profile than wire braces, so that’s less likely to be a serious issue. It’s worth saying that, in either case, you’ll get used to your oral appliance after wearing it for a few weeks.

As you can see, there are a lot of reasons to prefer clear aligners, many of which have nothing to do with how they look. If you’ve been wondering which orthodontic option is best for you, it’s worth keeping these merits in mind.
